Nigeria State Holds 31st Quran Recitation Competition
The competition, which is the 31st edition, opened Saturday with participants drawn from the 20 local government areas of the state.
Declaring the competition open, Governor Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar said that the money allocated for the competition is to be used for the purchase of data-x-items that will be given to the winners, accommodation of participants and officials during the week-long event.
He emphasized the importance of having the knowledge and ability to recite the noble Quran by Muslims.
"It is a must for any Muslim to know how to read and recite the Holy Quran. There is the need for Muslim associations to embark on this type of programs for the benefit of young Muslims across the globe," he said.
He therefore called on parents to make it possible for their children to embrace Islamic knowledge, adding that Muslim organizations cannot do it alone without the support of parents.
Governor Abubakar said that his administration will continue to support Quranic education in the state, adding that it would also sponsor the best candidates outside the country for similar competitions.
He commended the recitation competition committee led by Dr Zubairu Abubakar Madaki for a job well done in selecting Islamic scholars from across the state for the competition.
He urged the committee to do justice in selecting the best candidates who will emerge as winners.
In his welcome address, the state Commissioner for Religious Affairs, Baba Madugu, said that the Quranic recitation competition has been organized annually for the past 30 years both at the state and local government levels.
He said that the state has been producing best candidates for world Quranic recitation competitions.
Madugu expressed delight that the government has appointed the right people who will do justice in picking the best reciter in accordance with the set down rules and regulations of the competition.
The chairman of the Quranic recitation committee, Dr Zubairu Abubakar Madaki, in his speech said the competition is meant for both male and female Quran reciters from the 20 local government areas of the state.
He however said that the 220 participants were drawn from 13 LGAs that collected and returned their participation forms.
