‘Lady Amin and Bint al-Huda Sadr’ Forum Planned in Iraq

TEHRAN (IQNA) – The Iranian Cultural Center in Baghdad and Iraq’s Al-Shuhada Institute will jointly organize a forum about Lady Amin and Martyr Bint al-Huda Sadr.


According to the website of the Islamic Culture and Relations Organization, Hojat-ol-Islam Jamshidi, head of the Center for Directing Women’s Seminaries in Iran discussed the organization of the forum in a meeting with Ms. Najiha Al-Shemri, head of the Iraqi institute.

Noting that there are 500 Islamic seminary schools for women in the Shia world with more than 100000 female students, the cleric said that the two great ladies are good role models which can be presented to make the best use of seminary potentials.

Sedighe Hejazi, director general of ICRO’s Women and Family Affairs Department who was present at the meeting, said that given the cultural and religious commonalities between Iran and Iraq, the two great ladies can be introduced to the younger generations of both countries as role models.

She further stressed the need for the development of cultural relations among the women of different countries.

Also speaking in the meeting, Abazari, the Iranian cultural attaché, said that such academic forums are very important and good opportunities to investigate the activities and achievements of the two great ladies.

Ms. Al-Shemri, for her part, referred to the important role of women in societies, and said that women need to be introduced with such role models.

She stressed the necessity of providing opportunities for cultural interactions and said that the institute is ready to cooperate with the Iranian Cultural Center in this respect.

Hajiyeh Seyyedeh Nosrat Begum Amin, also known as Banu Amin, Lady Amin (1886–1983), was Iran’s most outstanding female jurisprudent, theologian and great Muslim mystic (‘arif) of the 20th century, a Lady Mujtahideh. She received numerous Ijazahs (permissions) of Ijtihad, among them from Ayatollahs Muhammad Kazim Husayni Shirazi (1873-1947) and Grand Ayatullah Arif (1859-1937), the founder of the Qom seminary (hawza).

She also granted numerous Ijazahs of Ijtihad to female and male scholars.

She wrote several books about Islamic sciences, among them a Tafsir in 15 volumes, and established a maktab in Isfahan in 1965, called Maktab-e Fatimah.

Amina al-Sadr, known as Bint al-Huda and Shahidat al-Sadr (1938-1980) was a writer and a politico-cultural activist in Iraq. She was in charge of al-Zahra schools in Najaf and Kazimayn. Writing articles for al-Adwa magazine, holding religious sessions at home, writing religious stories and composing poems were among her cultural and religious activities.

Following her protest for arresting her brother and her speech in the holy shrine of Imam Ali (AS), which led to public demonstrations in different cities and countries, she was imprisoned and then executed by the Ba'ath Regime of Iraq in 1980.
