TEHRAN (IQNA) – An Iraqi military commander said on Monday that six Daesh militants were killed in an airstrike on the outskirts of Khanaqin district in Diyala.

Speaking to AlSumaria News, commander of Tigris Operations Mazhar al-Izzawi said, “Iraqi warplanes launched a successful air raid on the outskirts of Khanaqin, leaving six Daesh militants killed.”

Izzawi added that the airstrike was launched upon accurate intelligence reports.

In January 2015, Iraqi forces announced liberation of Diyala province from Daesh terrorists who proclaimed an “Islamic Caliphate” in Iraq and Syria in 2014.

The province has seen months of fighting between Iraqi troops and Daesh militants especially in the Jalawla and Saadiyah areas in the province’s north and areas near the town of Muqdadiyah.

Daesh declared its self-styled “caliphate” in a third of Iraq and neighboring Syria in 2014. A government campaign, backed by popular forces, was launched in 2016 to retake Daesh-held regions, managing to retake all havens, most notably the city of Mosul, the group’s previously proclaimed capital.

Despite the group’s crushing defeat at its main havens across Iraq, Daesh continues to launch sporadic attacks against troops with security reports warning that the militant group still poses a threat against stability in the country.
