Int’l Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People to Be Marked Sunday
Member of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), Ahmad Majdalani, said that the Palestinians’ only demand since the 1948 Nakba or catastrophe after being forced out of their homes and lands has been and still is to enable them to exercise their right to self-determination, their right to freedom, independence and sovereignty over their land just as any other peoples and countries in the world.
He told Voice of Palestine radio today that countries that support the Palestinians’ right to independence through their support for the two-state solution should recognize the State of Palestine, just as they have recognized the State of Israel, and not link their recognition to that of Israel’s.
“The world should move from condemning and rejecting Israeli settlements to taking actual and serious steps to make Israel realize that there is a price for its settlement policy and its racist measures,” he said.
The ruling Fatah movement, meanwhile, said it plans several activities tomorrow, marking this international day, through tweets on social media and workshops around the world.
The General Union of Palestinian Communities in Europe also called for a series of activities and campaigns in solidarity with the Palestinian people and against the Israeli occupation and its daily policies and procedures against the Palestinians.
It urged its members to tweet on social media and raise the Palestinian flag on vehicles and windows of homes.
Meanwhile, the president of Americans and Palestinians for Peace, John Dabeet, told Voice of Palestine radio that a signature-collecting campaign will be launched tomorrow on social media in the United States with the aim of reaching out to the American people and institutions that support the Palestinian people.
He said the two-week campaign will collect as many signatures as possible on a petition calling on the international community to take a firm and serious stand in support of the Palestinian people.
“The campaign aims to reach as many American people and institutions as possible to deliver the Palestinian narrative to them and to win their support,” he said.
The government of South Africa also said in a statement on the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People that it supports Palestine and efforts to establish the independent, congruent, and viable Palestinian state as came in United Nations resolutions.
In 1977, the United Nations General Assembly called for the annual observance of 29 November as the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People (resolution 32/40 B). On that day, in 1947, the Assembly adopted the resolution on the partition of Palestine (resolution 181 (II)), which led to the dispersion and loss of home of the Palestinian people.
