TEHRAN (IQNA) – A South African scholar considers the sacrifice of life in the path of truth and the salvation of humanity, to be the common point between the movement of Imam Hussein (AS) and the life of Jesus Christ.

In an interview with IQNA, Christopher P. Clohessy, a professor of Shia studies, talked about the movement of Imam Hussein (AS) from a Christian point of view.

Clohessy studied at the Pontifical University Urbanianum in Rome, Italy, and received his doctorate from the Pontifical University of Arabic and Islamic Studies (PISAI) in Rome. He is currently teaching theology and history of Shiism in this university.

He is the author of "Angels Hastening: The Karbala Dreams", "Half of My Heart: The Narratives of Zaynab, Daughter of Ali" and "Fatima, Daughter of Muhammad".

On the similarities and common points between Catholic and Shia theology, Clohessy said: "There are many similarities; For example, figures like Hazrat Zainab have many similarities with the character of Hazrat Maryam from the point of view of Catholic theology. The character of Hazrat Maryam in Quran and Christianity are very similar".

"Also the character of Hazrat Fatimah, who is called Batul and was the mother of boys who were martyred. She is the intercessor of his followers and Umma al-Masaib. We have exactly such beliefs about Hazrat Maryam. For example, we attribute some kind of innocence to her and that his son Jesus was killed by cruel people" he added.

Clohessy went on to say: "There are also many similarities about Imam Hossein. Imam Hussein showed that he will not follow the Yazidi example, but he will follow the example of his grandfather, the Messenger of God. This is what Jesus did in Christianity. He sacrificed his life to bring people back to the path of God; Therefore, there are many similarities".
