TEHRAN (IQNA) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani described the relations between Tehran and Damascus as brotherly and strategic.

In a meeting with new Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad in Tehran on Tuesday, Rouhani added that the Iranian nation has always stood by the Syrian nation and government and will remain on the same path until final victory.

He described confronting the Zionist regime of Israel and terrorism as two common objectives of the two countries and said resistance against terrorists should continue.

He also condemned the US support for Israeli occupation of Syria’s Golan Heights and said confrontation with the Zionist regime should continue until the liberation of all occupied lands including the Golan Heights.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Rouhani expressed condolences on the recent death of Walid Muallem, Syria’s former foreign minister.

Mekdad, for his part, hailed the ties between Iran and Syria as valuable and a model for other countries.

Syria’s new foreign minister has travelled to Iran in his first foreign trip after taking office.

Mekdad has held talks on bilateral ties and regional and international developments with a number of other Iranian officials, including his counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif.
