TEHRAN (IQNA) – An Iraqi government spokesman lauded senior cleric Ayatollah Seyed Ali al-Sistani’s role in strengthening security and peaceful coexistence in the country.

Hassan Nazim referred to a recent visit to the country by Pope Francis and his meeting with Ayatollah Sistani, saying it showed the two spiritual leaders’ emphasis on the need for promoting peaceful coexistence, understanding and tolerance, Mawazin News reported.

Francis made a historic three-day visit to Iraq last month.

During the trip, he met the country’s highest Shia authority Ayatollah Sistani and visited Ur, the birthplace of Prophet Abraham (Ibrahim) and Mosul, a city still reeling from Daesh terrorist group’s occupation.

The issue of Palestine and the importance of peaceful coexistence among followers of different faiths were among the topics discussed during the Ayatollah Sistani and Pope Francis’ meeting.
