OIC Secretary General Visits Turkey in Wake of Deadly Quakes

TEHRAN (IQNA) – The secretary general of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) is paying an official visit to Turkey following the devastating quakes that hit the country more than two weeks ago.

On the first day of his trip on Wednesday, Hissein Brahim Taha travelled to Gaziantep and held meetings with governor Davul Gül and mayor Fatma Şahin.

Taha noted that he was visiting Turkey on behalf of all member states of the OIC, calling on all Muslim states to support Turkey following the natural disaster.

Taha is also scheduled to meet with Turkish Foreign Minister Cavusoglu in Ankara on Thursday.

The visit is made to demonstrate OIC’s solidarity with Turkish people and extension of condolences over the twin quakes that have claimed the lives of more than 42,300 people, the Turkish foreign ministry said in a statement on Tuesday, Anadolu Agency reported.

The 7.7 and 7.6 magnitude tremors were centered in Kahramanmaras and struck 10 other southern provinces – Hatay, Gaziantep, Adiyaman, Malatya, Adana, Diyarbakir, Kilis, Osmaniye, Sanliurfa and Elazig. More than 13 million people have been affected.

Condolences have poured in from around the world expressing solidarity with Turkey, with many countries sending rescue teams and aid.
