TEHRAN (IQNA) – A study of books written about methods and principles of education, we face a great amount of educational methods and in all of them, trials and tests are important means for education.

Testing, an educational method

Testing individuals is one of educational methods. In this method, the educator puts the student or trainee in a situation so that he can show his worth and qualifications. Abraham (AS), who was an Ulul Azm prophet, used this method and God mentions this in the Quran

Testing is one of the best educational methods and even God says in the Quran that He tests humans. Testing challenges humans, while they won’t be challenged by recommendation, advice, etc. For example, people should learn traffic regulations to become drivers but it is not enough. They should also drive a car for some time to test themselves and learn everything.

In the Quran, Prophet Abraham (AS) is introduced as a father who tests his son:

“When his son was old enough to work with him, he said, ‘My son, I have had a dream that I must sacrifice you. What do you think of this?’ He replied, ‘Father, fulfill whatever you are commanded to do and you will find me patient, by the will of God’.” (Verse 102 of Surah As-Saffat)

According to this verse, Abraham (AS) asked for his son’s view and it can be for two reasons: 1-Councelling 2-Testing

Obviously, one does not seek counselling for something that God has ordered. So the first one is not the case. As for the second, there are explanations in Quran interpretations:

Allameh Tabatabaei says in Al-Mizan Exegesis of the Quran that the Arabic word ‘Tara’ in the verse means “what is your view (about this)” not “what do you see”. Abraham (AS) tested his son to see what his response is.

According to Athna Ashari Quran interpretation, Abraham did not seek consultation but asked Ismail (AS) for his view to see whether or not he can pass this great exam by having endurance and steadfastness.

Ismail (AS) passed this test proudly and acted in accordance with God’s order, submitting to His command.
