TEHRAN (IQNA) – Idolaters did not say idols were their creators but said idols were their gods.

Your God is One God

Islamic Seminary scholar Mohsen Faqih made the remark in a session on interpretation of Verses 159 to 163 of Surah Al-Baqrah, focusing on Tawheed (monotheism). Following are excerpts from his remarks:

Verse 163 of Surah Al-Baqarah is about proving the oneness of God. The point here is that Allah is one because He is God. When it is proven that He is one, it becomes necessary that He must be Rahman and Rahim (compassionate and merciful).

One may imagine another deity as idols were considered deities but the Creator who has the highest power has to be one and this is a fact proving the oneness of God.

Ilah means deity and this verse (163 of Surah Al-Baqarah) “Your God is One God. There is no god except He. He is the Merciful, the Most Merciful,” confirms this meaning.

According to one verse of the Quran, the people of Moses (AS) asked him to introduce a god to them just as others have gods. These requests does not mean that idolaters consider idols to be their creator but they sought deities to worship. So they accepted the fact that God was their creator. They were not so naïve to believe that stone and wood had created them.

Another verse about proving oneness of God is Verse 39 of Surah Yusuf: “… which is better, many gods at variance, or Allah the One, the Conqueror.”

This verse uses the phrase the One God. Why is God one? Because He is all powerful. This is an attribute that attests to His oneness. That is, because God is omnipotent, he is also necessarily one. In other words, if there were two gods in the universe, they could not be omnipotent.
