Egyptian Qari Crowned in Qatar ‘Awal Al Awail’ Quran Contest

TEHRAN (IQNA) – An Egyptian Qari has claimed the title of the second edition of the " Awal Al Awail" international Quran competition in Qatar.

The competition is the international section of the Sheikh Jassim bin Muhammad Al Thani Quran competition, organized by Qatar's Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs. The participants compete in different categories featuring Quran memorization, Tajweed, Tarteel and meaning of the words of the Quran.

The winner, Muhammad Saad Abdul Jalil from Egypt, was honored by Minister of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs Ghanem bin Shaheen bin Ghanem Al Ghanim at the closing ceremony held at the Sheraton Hotel on Sunday. He received a shield of honor, a certificate of appreciation, and a prize of one million Qatari riyals (nearly $250,000 USD), Al-Raya Daily reported on Monday.

The judging committee, headed by Sheikh Ahmed Issa Al-Masarawi, was also honored at the ceremony.

The competition, which lasted 12 days, witnessed strong competition among 80 contestants from 26 countries.

Nasser Yousef Al-Sulaiti, the Chairman of the Organizing Committee, praised the efforts of the officials and the employees who made the competition a great success. He said that the Sheikh Jassim Competition has been serving the Book of God since its inception and has been promoting its memorization, recitation, and understanding.

Jassim Abdullah Mohammed Al Ali, a member of the organizing committee and the official spokesman for the competition, said that this was the second edition of the event, which was postponed due to the covid-19 pandemic. The first edition took place in 2016. He said the competition will be held every three years.

He added that this season was different from the previous one because the number of contestants had increased. In the first season, there were 40 contestants, but in this season, 80 contestants were screened in the initial stage, leaving 40 contestants, then 10 contestants.

The Egyptian Qari, Muhammad Saad Abdel Jalil, who won the title of the competition, expressed his joy at achieving the title, but also acknowledged the responsibility that came with it. He prayed to God Almighty to help him with it, and said that the challenge was not only to memorize the Quran, but also to follow its morals, as man should be the foremost in morals.

Abdel Jalil said that he qualified for this global competition after he came first in the Port Said International Competition for Memorizing the Holy Quran in Egypt in 2019.
